The neighborhood stray cat has moved into our farmhouse. He is gray with white paws and a white stripe down his belly. We have named him Vincent in honor of “The Vincent Falls” (our local swimming hole). He is terribly friendly and has a terrific purr. I could not be more delighted to have a pet:)
We recently lived in a series of apartments that did not let us keep animals. When my depression was intense and truly debilitating, I often wished for a pet. I have long believed that animals are a form of therapy in their own right. Vincent provides a diversion from my negative thoughts and anxieties. With the recent job loss and move; as well as the medical issues facing us, it’s nice to have a pleasant distraction. When I am depressed or anxious, I find trying to explain how I am feeling very challenging. Sometimes this is due to my own shame, other times the feelings are so intense and overwhelming that I am unable to accurately articulate what it feels like. The presence of a pet is very soothing. Pets don’t require an explanation. If I am having a bad day, I never feel guilty for being depressed around them. Rather, they are a friendly companion who sit in your lap and can provide an amazing amount of comfort.
Kudos to Vincent who has been patiently sitting in the chair beside me while I write this :)

You're right. Pets make a world of difference. My sister got a cat a few months ago and it has made her so so happy too. The cat got her through a tough time.
ReplyDeleteYou and a cat. It's so natural! I bet Charles missed you!
